I messed around these settings like mentioned in the NHF and got a big boost (using hdparm -t /dev/hda) from ~3.5 MB/s to ~16.0 MB/s. But are there any compromises in terms of stablility and any possible ramifications (potential data loss, etc.)? It makes sense to have 16bit default for reliablity & stability...but do you think these higher settings are better?

Also, is the -x flag "dangerous" to mess with? I think it enables ATA/33...right?

And lastly, does enabling data "sync" speed things up?...I've heard both ways or that it works only speeds things up for CDRom drives
