Are the drive cables plugged in the right way, not upside down? Check and see.
It could be some kind of bios issue, also.

if you replaced the HD and still have the problem, then I would think it is the IDE controller.

Waitaminnit....
Did you install an OS on it?
If it's a brand new, bare drive, there isn't going to be any OS on it. The laptop needs an OS to run.
Will it boot from a floppy or a CDROM? You probably need to boot from one of those and actually install an OS (Linux, Win9x, *BSD, something) in order to get it running.

I got this IBM 560 E running again with WINDOW 95 after I have to pay $ 20 US. The hard disk has to fixdisk via IBM floppy drive with IBM initial disk.
I do not understand why I have fdisk and format it and then installed a windows 95 under desktop environment ( IDE adapter - convertor). It runs well under desktop environment. I pull it out and was hoping to run it under IBM NOTE Book.
any thing, no thanks to you MD watts. YOU do not help me at all.

I only suggested that the problem could be the IDE controller.
What is wrong with that?
Keep that up and you will find your account banned.

Please don't ban him mdwatts. Instead, find away to get him to increase his volume of posts. I haven't laughed so hard since seeing that "All your base are belong to us" crap a while back! Not only does he use Babelfish to translate his posts, he also has insane ideas like building his own lawnmower and constructing his own PCI cards in his basement (which he thinks he can do by readin up on it on the internet)!!

You cannot blame someone just because English is not their native language, BUT I do agree with the rest.
802.11 (aka worldtouch) seems to think everyone here should know how to build a Linux lawnmower and construct their own PCI cards.

Where are your manners?
But, i will try to help anyway. If you have not yet been banned. Get yourself a copy of XFDISK. Boot to a DOS startup disk. Then use XFDISK. It is fairly self explainatory. Do not complain it is slow, because it is also thorough. Then after you have finished - install an os.
I have fixed many of "fried" harddrives with XFDISK.
Good luck and take an etiquette class.

P.S. to: mdwatts
Greatly appreciate your suggestion of Caldera OpenLinux 3.1.1 Workstation. Took longer to download than to install and configure. And it is starting to bring my kids out of the winpit.

Glad to see you (and the family) are enjoying Caldera or Linux in general.
Lots to learn though... :)

The whole point of computers - learning.
Started programming as a teenager on the C64. My computing rules etched in granite: 1.) You can always say "F" it, wipe it, and redo it. 2.) If it was so important you should have burnt it to a CD.
Thanks again,

..I've a feeling the OS may have to 'flash' the HD, i.e., install some pesky S/W... Wonder if this one's worth 'remembering' for the next Laptop Hard Drive upgrade?
