Command line Question

I like running programs from the command line, as I'm sure most people do. The problem is every time I pull up a terminal and run a program, I can no longer use the terminal. If I close the terminal it kills the program too. What I want to know is there an option I can put in when launching a program, for instance XMMS that would alow me to still use the terminal I launched it from?

DUH!!!! Ahhh, I feal like an idiot now. I use that to modify start-up. I should have figured that out. Thanks ronmon.
