I installed a usr performance pro modem and it is detected on ttys4. this port is not selectable with kppp or gnome-ppp. How can I reconfig the modem or have that port recognized by linux? I am using Mandrake 9.0. Modem works with minicom

If you are sure Linux detects the modem on /etc/ttyS4, then create a symlink to /dev/modem
ln -s /dev/ttyS4 /dev/modem
and select /dev/modem in kppp.

I did and still doesn't work. linuxconf detects modem on /dev/ttyS4. I am using a 3Com performance pro. I downloaded a config app from 3com but I don't understand how to use it.
it reads:
.th 3commdm 1
.sh name 3commdm \-enables 3com pci controller based modems
.sh synopsis
.b 3commdm
[port]
.sh description
.I 3commdm
parses the PCI device list created during boot. if it finds a 3com serial controller based modem it will the call .I serial with the appropriate parameters.
.I 3commdm will accept zero or one parameter. if given, the parameter specifies the serial port that is set for the modem. It should be something like /dev/ttyS3. If no parameter is passed .I 3commdm
