I'm working with linux for really the first time (played with some shells, but thats it). I am using a default install of Mandrake 7.2 with KDE. I would really like to try the new beta of evolution, but there is no rpm or binary. Do I have to download all of the dependencies (listed on ximian's site), install those, then evolution?

I tried anyway, but didn't get further than the first package I tried to install. I managed to untar it and ran ./configure. No Make file. Oh look, gcc is not installed. So I install gcc. Does alot more stuff, but still no make file... grrr. This time it says something about glib (I believe, closed the terminal and smoked a cig).

What the hell? Is installing anything going to require me to spend hours tracking, installing, and upgrading dependencies?

Please help before I give up for yet another year or so.

A newer version of any distro will give you a better chance of software installing without dependency problems.

Starting with Mandrake 8 instead of 7.2 could save you a bit of grief if you plan to install any of the latest software that's available.
