I've been thinking about trying Gentoo. Does anyone have a recommendation? All I have ever used are rpm distros and a little experience with Solaris 8 for intel. Would it make for a good home network/router or internet sharing setup?

AFAIK Gentoo is really aimed at being a full distro, rather than just a firewall/router. You'd probably be better off getting a dedicated distro.
However, Gentoo is supposed to be very quick (once installed) because everything is installed from source. You had better have a fast net connection otherwise the installation probably won't be worth it.

I would like to use for a full distro as well, so that's not a problem. As for my connection speed, I just got my cable dsl up and on the network 5 minutes ago. I download a 70-100 Kbytes/sec, which is 3-4 times what my phone line dsl was. I just clocked my download at 743 kbps and upload at 219 kbps. That's on one of the shared connections. :D :D :D

I would defanitly recommend checking it out. I've been using Gentoo for a while now and just love it. Gentoo will make a fine firewall/router, I use it on both my PCs. If having complete control over your pc and you don't mind installing everything from source Gentoo's definatly for you. Not to mention Portage is by far the best package manger I've had the pleasure of using.
The install is pretty straightforward, just follow the instruction closely, and find something to keep you occupied for some time to come, cause even on my dual Athlon it takes a couple hours.
