I compiled it, did everything I was supposed to do. But on startup it hangs after the "booting kernel" message.
I'm running Debian 2.2.
Damn good thing I kept my old kernel around under a different lilo name. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
Anybody know how to fix this? Or what the problem might be? As I said before, I read the readme and did everything I was supposed to do. However I run lilo from the /boot partition, could it be that I need to change the boot.b (think thats the file) and the system.* file?
Thanks

What did you do to copy the new kernel to /boot?

Did you copy the linux/System.map file to /boot? The way I have it set up is that I have a bunch of /boot/System.map.(kernelversion) files and System.map is a symlink pointing to the one I want to use.

This is also happening to me. My system map file is there for 2.4 however I dont see any module info files. Could that be the problem?

I also have this problem after making the kernel step by step like the kernel-package readme said.

I am Having the same problem, I too did everything the README said to do. I mv'd my System.map to the old kernel number, and copied the new one to /boot and made a symlink to it.(using drake 7.2, and nearly everything is Symlinked.)
I wanted to be able to use my old kernel if i couldn't boot the new one, but the way Mandrake has everything symlinked i am trying to figure a way around it, as i use Loadlin and dont use either grub or Lilo
If anyone who uses Drake 7.2 and is using the 2.4.0 kernel, I'd be greatfull for some info on getting it to boot.

LiNuts - I was using 2.4 with Mandrake 7.2 - I just did the regular install and booted from Grub but I see no reason why you couldn't just do the make install and copy your kernel image to the Windows partition for use with loadlin. Anyway, I went back to 2.2.17 kernel for now because Mandrake kernel seems to be patched for "supermount" which doesn't look readily available for kernel 2.4 - and I was having some problems with my USB printer.
