tweaking -- configuring -- making all nice and shiny

now that i've got linux installed, before i start to use it more than windows, i want to get it running fast, smooth and how i like it... what are some ways i can do this? i want it set it up so that nothing is gonna crash on me... last night, i left my box on overnight, hoping to still be logged in this morning, but i wasn't... i turned on the monitor and it was at the login screen. so i figure something went wrong while i was sleeping, although only GnomeICU was running...
any little tricks will help

hummm....
do a cat /var/log/messages and see what exactly happened. I have never seen this, the messages file should give you info on what time this occured.
where you connected to the internet all night while ICU was running?

It has done this to me twice in a year. X windows crashed on me while I was logged in, bringing me back to the graphical log in. All of my text sessions were still loged in though. I'm not exactly sure what causes this.

it's actually happened a couple times now... somebody told me to re-seat my ram, because it's a fault in the higher addresses of memory, but i'm not too sure about this one...

sooo, does anyone maybe know what my problem is? i'm gonna leave er on again all night and see if it logs me out, and hopefully, it was just a freak thing...
