Shutdown prob. with 2.4.6 kernel

I compiled the thing with APM chose "yes" in xconfig,in KDE Login-sessions tab I chose "all" for who can shutdown the computer but it refuses to shutdown on its own,not even from the console(shutdown -h now)Everything unmounts fine I have to hit power button to shut it off.Someone have solution for this?

I don't know if this will work, but it does for me:

In the kernel configuration, under General Setup, you have Power Management Support. You put that to y and right under you have Advanced power Management BIOS support. SAy yes to that too. Compile and reboot (save & quit, make dep && make clean && make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install && make bzlilo && reboot) and then try doing a halt and see if it shuts down automaticaly

Yep,I did that and the thing still will not power down on it's own.I have ran out of ideas.Hope someone has a fix for this.Thanks for the reply,GnuVince

For starters, which distro are you running. Also - are you sure your waiting long enough before you shut down manually(ex:growing impatient) and also - are you able to reboot the machine at all - (su to root---reboot)?

Using SuSE7.1 it'll sit all night and not shutdown but it will reboot just fine.Sorry for not being clearer.

Any messages right at the end of shutdown that tells why it is not working?

One of my pc's at work with the 2.4.2 kernel powers off fine, but the same distro on one of my home pc's does not. A couple of messages are displayed right at the end of shutdown. I haven't bothered looking into it yet though.

All I get is"system will be halted immediately".Just does not power down on its own.Hope this helps. :confused:

Does you BIOS have power management features? If so, are they ON or OFF?

Yep, is on in BIOS,mine is an Award BIOS

Well everyone I vaporized 2.4.6 and installed 2.4.7 kernel and so far it is working great.No shutdown problem or any other probs for that matter.Not yet anyway.Thank you all for your help. :D
