I am trying to do a fresh install of Red Hat 8.0.
I downloaded the three install CD's and checked the MD5SUM's and they are all right. Created CD's from the ISO's (yes the proper way)
When anaconda starts everything works fine. Then once it starts to install it stops with a fatel error. I saved the error message to floppy and attached it here. It is a VERY LONG error message and I could not understand what any of it means.

Someone PLEASE help

Thanks in advance

I loaded the install again and it started to install fine but then stoped and said a file was missing.

The MD5SUM was perfect so I know it was a good download, Right?

I was going to boot back into Win XP to reburn the CD but I guess it has done something to the MBR cause now it just says PRESS ANY KEY TO REBOOT

What do I do now????

<6> hda: unknown partition table
<6> hda:

That is odd. You are installing to which hard disk?

* module(s) ide-cd not found

You have a CD drive yet the module file is not found by the install CD? Maybe your install CD burned with an error?

* Detected 128M of memory
* Swap attempt of 128M to 256M

That looks a little funny. What is your system memory amount?

Whoa! this is like live communications! This arrived before I completed my earlier reply.
Yes, I'd say the MBR got whacked. Maybe you could try FDISK /MBR from a windows boot disk.

I gotta drop out, now, sorry; others here can pick up the thread. Will check in tomorrow, I'm so sorry to leave you right now!

mediacheck failed means that there is something wrong with the cd. you better reburn the first cd and if the error persisits, download it again and reburn it.
if you have a win98 bootdisk, boot into it and at the command prompt type: fdisk /mbr. This will restore your mbr.

I fdisked the MBR and nothing happened.
It just went back to the command prompt.
Is any kind of menu or anything suposed to come up?

Well either way I restarted and it does the same thing

Do I have to run fdisk from the command prompt of my HD or does it matter?

I am running Win XP on NTFS so I can not get to the drive with a 98se boot disk

when you boot from the win98 boot floppy, you will get a command prompt like a:\
that is where you type fdisk /mbr and hit enter.
BTW what are the error messages you get before you get to PRESS ANY KEY TO REBOOT
you might have to use your XP cd to repair your xp install if the above is not working for you
did you specify the partition to install linux to when you were trying to install linux?

sorry, seems like fdisk /mbr did not work for you.
use your XP cd to boot the XP install program. When the option comes up to install or repair, choose repair. From the recovery console prompt, type in "fixmbr" (without quotes). Now you'll be able to boot XP hopefully.
if you still have a problem then again in the recovery console type "chkdsk /r "
hopefully that should solve your problem.

Nothing is working

Luckly I installed XP on 1 partition and save all my stuff onto 2 other partitions so I'm just going to reinstall XP and start over

hopefully you didn't re-install WinXP yet...

to fix your mbr just boot from your winxp cd and go into the recovery console and type fixmbr.

You could try using different discs. I use Fujifilm CDrs for all my Operating System burning needs.

Oh oke.
So ur telling maybe it's the CD dist that maybe causing the problem?
I've downloaded SuSE and burned it on my CD with no problem.
I have Platinum CDr's.
80 Min 700 MB
And I really want to install Mandrake 9.0 or Red Hat 8.0 and i'm having trouble with both of them.

It might. One time when I was trying to burn a OS install CD to a memorex, it turns out that CD didn't work the way it should. It wouldn't detect one of theHDs, and it would detect only one CD Rom drive.

I burned the same OS Installer to a different brand CDr, and it works.

But this is only my experience. Like I said, try different brands. Maybe you'll get lucky.

Ok Thnx for the tip.
Just one more question before I stop bugging you.
I'm currently downloading Mandrake 8.2
And I'll try to install it and then update it.
Is Mandrake 8.2 a good distro?
