Hi

I'll make the following partitions, using FDISK on a bootable Win'98 floppy.

C - 6GB - Primary (Win'98)
D - 100MB - Primary
E - 11GB - Extended Logical
F - ~2.9GB - Extended Logical

During the RH8.0 install procedure -
* Can I install LILO / GRUB into D, so that I can use FDISK and set it as active partition? Would this allow me to choose between Win'98 & Linux, as if LILO were loaded in MBR?
* Instead of installing LILO / GRUB into D, if I make D the BOOT partition for RH8, can I forego installation of LILO / GRUB? Then I could still use FDISK to set it as a active partition
* I'll use E (existing 11GB Extended Logical drive) for the following paritions. I'm the ONLY USER of this system
/swap - 512MB (twice RAM)
/ - 500MB
/home - 6GB
/usr - 3GB
/var - 500MB
/tmp - 500MB

Please tell me if the above partition scheme is okay. If not, kindly tell me what other way can I go about the job.

I decided on the above scheme after viewing opinions under the threads "/Boot question" & "Newbie: RH8.0 Pre-installation Questions". I'm quite dense, so kindly forgive me you feel that my questions were answered in the previous threads.

TIA & Regards

Welcome to Linux Newbie!

I never tried using (and personally would not use) Microsofts' FDISK for allocating any Linux partitions. I'd just leave the rest of the physical drive unallocated (your drive letters D, E, and F).
Then, when RHs installer launches, make certain you manually set up partitions using the Redhat Linux partition tools (cfdisk, fdisk, disk druid, etc). I'm dual booting one machine (DR-DOS and Arch Linux), used the DR-DOS FDISK to setup only a small fat16 partition for DR-DOS, I left the remainder of the 30 gig drive unallocated, and added partitions via Linux' FDISK program - just as I mentioned above.

If you have some reason for needing Microsoft FDISK, then I'll drop out here: I have minimized my exposure to Microsoft code.

D, E, F are un-formatted partitions created with FDISK. I can't even see them in Windows Explorer.

Will creating partitions with FDISK create any problems?

Probably not. But with RH8, I think the installer will try for any unformatted/unpartitioned space. I do think you can use the drives you created.
