i am going to build a fairly cheap computer... to me the main problem for me is choosing between an AMD, or an Intel system. this computer will prob run Redhat 8. what do you guys think would be a better way to go with this computer, AMD or Intel? talkin about XP, and P4

thanks, justin

Ran at least 10 different distros on my AMD machine with no problems. Have had some problems with my Pentiun III machine, mainly with Intel chipsets.

I like AMDs besides costing less then Pentiums.

I got an AMD XP 1700 cpu and haven't had any problems running Slackware linux and recently added Debian to it.

I concur, IMHO AMD Proc's give the best bang for the buck. I am big into gaming & when I was researching my new box the AMD proc's were recomended base on price & performance

At home I always and only buy AMD processors.

My main box has dual AMD 1800 MP's and I've never had any problems.

alright, AMD it is! thats what i was kinda hoping you guys would say, cause i do also think that you get more bang for the buck. and im also glad that you guys havent encountered many probs with AMD systems and linux.

thanks,

justin

AMD period.
I work on computers in (too much of) my spare time. I have yet to see an AMD burn out. Pentium on the other hand ... well, maybe i am prejudice, but do not even consider it unless someone gives it to you for free. We have seven computer up and running in my home. All AMDs. Glad to see you are building a computer rather than buying a packaged deal. I have the must trouble working with the packages. Too proprietary and they usually have problems, i mean, Intel inside.
Good luck,

You can buy a case, power supply (at least a 350-400w) mobo & cpu, then use your HD, vid card and sound from your old machine and upgrade a little at a time. Look for mobo/cpu combo deals. Research your proposed mobo on the review sites before you make a final descision though.

Here's some ideas....................................

thanks for all the info guys, and thanks johnT, thoes are some pretty good deals on the mobo & proc., the tigerdirect company seems like a pretty reliable one, i think i will prob. buy from them. i am pretty tight when it comes to money tho, so i will def. be doing some reading about the mobo before i buy it, and see if other people like it. well, wish me luck

There might be some cheaper places to buy, but I'll personally vouch for tigerdirect. Customer support on resolving any issue, no matter what the size, is excellent.

pricewatch rocks but if you get the package deals you usually get some pretty cheap mobo's. the package i ordered from them i got a mobo from pc chips. never heard of em but haven't had any trouble with it so i'm not really complaining. tigerdirect is pretty reliable to. i ordered my video card from them when i built my pc and got a decent price considering geforce3's were still pretty new.

I have seen an AMD chip burn out. It was quite spectacular, really. Then I noticed the heatsink and fan lying on the bench where they really weren't doing much good... :o

AMD certainly get my endorsement though. I have built many machines with either K6, Athlon or Duron variety.

It was a nice chip too, my first 1.1GHz, and I never got to use it.

p.s. I really really like Gigabyte's mobos. I have not had one fail on me yet...

I just put together my new (already obsolete) system for about 350 bucks total. Funny how the guy at Fry's didn't recommend me putting that loss leader fic31at up with Linux. Hell, I popped in the deb 3.0 and it loaded up way faster than win2k (besides having to wait for win2k to load all it's boot crap every time you change your mind about something in the install...debian gives you a complete list of all the install steps and allows you to choose what you want to do, when you want, and change your mind about anything at anytime...but I digress) I can install deb 3.0 in 1/10 the time of win2k, for sure. It's a kickass (and cheap) board...I got the bundle for 149 bucks. It has the ati radeon 9700 chip set on it, a realtek lan built in, 4 usb, tv out (rca and s-video jacks), soudblaster compatible on board...everything works great. Got a stick of 256MB DDR 2100 for 55 bucks, a kickass foxconn case solid aluminum with a 350W pwer supply in it and two fans already installed, and 2 usb jacks in front for 50 bucks, and a ibm 100GB for 99 bucks...and voila! the 120 gb went on sale the next week for 119, but hey, by the time I fill that puppy up, I'll be lookin at serial ata...

so that's my new system...and it smokes. Oh, did I mention that it came with a oem box athlon xp2000, fan, heat sink, and goo strip, included?

I already had the keyboard mouse and monitor...so I got set for just about 350 bucks... hell of a deal. I'm thinking I can almost post process video now, maybe I should get a dvd burner....

The only problem I had was that the bf24 install panicked on it, so it's running the 2.2, but it's inside my network, so I don't really need iptables, which is the only reason I would run 2.4 in the first place. but the 2.2 (default) woody install came up, configd net for me, found the lan adapter, everything. It's freakin awesome. I haven't had a new system for about 3 years (last one was a celeron 400, I swore off intel at that point..or swore at them as the case may be) so pardon if I babble a bit.

I can almost game now. whoa. that radeon chipset is pretty frickin good. it's no nvidea, but what do I know...it's compatible with most everything, so it seems, so far...

AMD...besides, everyone I know that has a p4 has not seen any improvement over their high end p3 systems. Lots of ppl I know run dual athlons....

as usual more than anyone wanted to hear....

AMD all the way! I have a 1.0 gigahertz AMD and it runs 1.5-2 times as fast the 2.0 gigahertz P4! Never have I had my AMD even get close to warm! But I have had to shut down my P4 because my Hardware monitor noticed it was way overheating... so AMD all the way!
