Does anyone have experience installing linux on a compaq laptop. I have a presario 900us and I have tried RedHat 7.3 and a Lycoris distro, both of them hang in the beginning RH when it's loading the kernel and lycoris when it probes for hardware (nic is the hang point)
Please help so i can start enjoying linux like everyone else:confused:

I've installed (actually I run) Slackware on a Compaq Presario 1600 model.
Runs fine! Found my PCMCIA Nic, I have sound and GUI.
I need a bigger HD though...

Did you try installing with the Nic card removed?

Okay here is my laptop problem. I installed Mandrake 6.5 on a Texas Instuments Extensa 605CD laptop. It wouldn't set up the pcmcia slots so I downloaded pcmcia-cs-3.2.1 and followed the install instructions. It will now recognize the slots and detect cards. The problem is when I reboot it locks the computer at pcmcia detection. I ran ./pcmcia start right after the install and it keeps repeating "Starting PCMCIA services" over and over. I have to hit ctrl c to get ti to quit. Then it repeats cardmgr is already running over and over until i hit ctrl c. It then detects my card when i insert it and I can even dial out. But when I reboot it stops at pcmcia and wont go any further. arg what am I to do?

basically pass the argument NOPCMCIA=yes
then configure some settings so it won't hang later

900us is a pain, but its being worked on.
Though, in this current date in time. if you update your status, that be great. Assuming you got RH8 installed, and booting. parameters, nopci, nousb, and i forgot which other one will get you going. Then, you will need to install the 2.4.21-pre3 kerenel. although beta kernel, it has the best support for the laptop and will give you t he least trouble as of the moment, despite being in a beta stage.
