Hello All! I have only been using linux for a few weeks so don't be surprised if I come off clueless!
I first tried Redhat 8.0, using the default Gnome mail client......I can't think of the name right now. Anyways, I tried to setup the email and I kept getting a message "A required priviledge is not held by client".
I could send mail but couldn't recieve it. So I switched to Mandrake (which I like better) and tried using Kmail, hoping fora different outcome. Same thing. Same error.
My mailserver is an Exchange 5.5 server. Running on an NT Server..........Any ideas?????
Is there some type of software that i have to use inbetween the server and the linux workstation? I checked the mailserver thoroughly, all the POP3 stuff is enabled. I tried IMAP also. LIke I said I can send fine.

Evolution was the other one. Not that it matters though.

Do you really think we (the other newbies) know the answers to every single Linux question?
Do you know every single answer to every single question about every single Windows version and every single Windows application? (thousands of them).
Have you bothered to look around the LNO forums to see how busy there are? I've been home from work for nearly 3 hours of which I immediately logged onto LNO and this is only the 4th forum I've been able to get to.
Too many questions and not enough answers to go around.
Some members wait as long as 12-24 hours before they even receive a single response.
I'm sorry, but that is the way it is.
Volunteers are not obligated to spend their time here at LNO and none of us get paid for this.
Personally I am getting very tired of spending 50 hours a week here, plus my full time job.

sometimes it is because we aren't listening.
That said, a bit of free advice:
When you ask a Q around here, it is helpful if you just let it sit. I'm not accusing you of being impatient -- hell, we're ALL impatient (me especially) :)
But, here's what sometimes happens:
You post a question. People see the Q and think to themselves, "Oh! I can probably answer that."
But suppose that you come back BEFORE someone answers and you reply to your question. Then you come back and reply again.
Now, somebody looks at your Q and sees that you already have two answers and they figure they have not much chance of improving on that, so they don't even look.
Best bet is to let your question rest and understand that this is an international thing and people are browsing around here all hours of the day/night. Click the box that says you'd like to be notified by email when someone responds (you may not ALWAYS want to do that, but sometimes it is good).
And wait.
Even though you now (thanks ! to me) have THREE replies, you will probably hear from someone.
Chuck
P.S. I'm having the ALMOST EXACT problem you are (which is why I stuck my nose in here), but I'm trying to use Windows98 clients to retrieve mail from Linux mail server and having no good luck.
:(

Plus typing in all caps is annoying.
Anyways, I'm no expert on e-mail clients as I use all web based e-mail. Did you try to run the program as root and see what happens? Perhaps the mail that your program accesses is set for root only access. Just a thought though.

That is what did it for me...
I certainly understand that everyone would like to have their questions answered, but it just won't happen. There isn't enough to go around.
I feel quilty enough when I see new members patiently waiting for their (12-24 hour old) questions to at least receive a single response, but when they demand, that is when I've had enough.
We are strictly voluteers here at Linuxnewbie.
If you require professional support, then I would suggest you pay for it. Even then you may not receive the support you pay for.
Here it is free and we do try our best.

Couldn't we have an outstanding post forum to move unanswered posts to? I know that I read over new posts and more often than not I can't even answer their questions with my current knowledge base, but I might be able to next week when I run into something similar on my own machine if you know what I mean. But I'm no expert, just a thought.

That would work, but then some of those members that have patiently been waiting for a response may very well just give up by then.
I really don't know what the solution is.
And now LNO is getting busier and busier by the day.
I'll have to quit my job soon. :(

Sorry if I came acrossed impatient, I was hoping to encourage people! :) I do understand this is free, and i appreciate it. I have searched through many of the old threads, with no luck. Nothing i found was quite like my problem. But i'm sure there are many many I havent went through yet. I have beat my head on this one for a couple weeks when I have time. I don't understand running it from root, what do you mean? I am completely new at this. But I am very much enjoying Linux! If I could just get this email working, I could use it almost full time at work, and w/ a few plugins, at school also.
Again, sorry for coming across bad, I just need help!
Thanks though for the advice!

Since you are getting the same error with both Redhat and Mandrake and different mail clients, I suspect it would be some setting that needs to be configured to use with MS Exchange.
I've never used MS Exchange and wouldn't know how to setup the Linux mail clients.
Did you follow any Linux/MS Exchange tutorials? I'm sure there are some available on the web.
If I have time at work today, I'll try to find some for you and post back.

I used my old favorite Google for Linux.
See if you can find something to help in these search results for 'linux "ms exchange"' (http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=linux+%22ms+exchange%22).
From what I can see in those search results, you should find tutorials/how-to's etc. to help.

Is this what you are after?:

Changing distro is quite drastic just because your mail didn't work!

Even if, as mdwatts says, new posters will give up after a few days with no reply, at least people searching in the future might find a response if these unanswered posts get answered because they have been "highlighted" by moving to a special forum.
It would be fairly easy and untedious to move all the posts. Someone might even be able to write a PHP script to do it automatically if a thread remians on zero replies for more than a week. The moved thread should be left with a "MOVED TO -->" marker though naturally.
I think it should be done, im my humble opinion.

It's a good idea, but I can't see it happening. As good as the site maintainers are, I don't think they'd want to spend time developing this. If I my php skills weren't so basic I'd probably have a crack at it. Any volunteers? :)

I have looked through my exchange server pretty well. I really don't think that there is anything else in there, unless there is an add in. POP3 stuff works fine, I can use Outlook Experess and use the POP3 stuff fine......so it's definitly something between linux and exchange. I'll look through that google search and that ximian sight and see if I can find anything.

And your absolutely certain you have the correct smtp server set up in whichever program you are using? And your positive your not blocking the outgoing smtp port?

I can send mail fine. I just can't recieve it. I just stumbled over something, it gives me that error message (A required priviledge is not held by user) no matter what password I am using. I wonder if for some reason the password just isn't going through right...........
I am pretty sure that there is nothing wrong w/ the protocols on the server being blocked. I can connect using outlook express and stuff......:( ....still no luck. I still have to look through that search engine....I'm pretty busy today..
