Hey everyone:

A while back I had a dual booted machine on a 20 gig hd. I left 15 for my windows partition (mp3's and divx there as well) and the remaining 5 for linux. this was a good learning process, and eventually got a new computer and made one of each (win/linux). now that hard drive is only showing 15 gig. this is through windows utilities(explorer, etc.), and also progs such as partition magic. Now it is about time for windows to get washed (format, reinstall) and I was wondering if I possibly did fdisk /mbr I could regain the missing 5 gig. but also instead of ftping all my stuff to my linux box I want to save (mp3, files, etc) I was gonna create a new partition and put all that stuff on it. My question is if I do that and then do the fdisk /mbr, will I loose the partition info for the new D:\ drive with all the data. also is this a possible fix to again have a 20 gig hard drive, or will the fdisk /mbr be irrelevent??

If you still have linux on this box try using the linux fdisk utility.

Partition magic should see the linux partition. I have never had it fail to do so. So I am not sure what the problem is. Windows fdisk probably will see the non-dos partitions but will probably fail to reallocate the space. the /MBR switch will only get rid of lilo if it is installed in the MBR.

Hope this is helpful
