ok ive worked with linux a little before, even managed to get a webserver set up with apache. but that was several months ago and i havent had a chance to use linux since.
anyway, i just need some basics to get started on my second time around. im going to be putting together a few (maybe 2-3, perhaps more) systems with linux, as well as an existing win system. i want to setup a webserver, router/gateway, firewall, mailserver (ill be using mandrake). this is going to be very time consuming and not at all easy i know. but i wanted to know your recommendations:
- how many systems would i need?
- what programs? (apache, sendmail, etc...)
- any good resources on the web and/or books?
- any other info i may need

thanks

As for computers, I'd say you'd need 3.

One for your firewall and routing.
One for your webserver.
One for your mx server.
All together, I would pay more than 600 bucks for all those systems put together. You just might have to give up X on some of those machines (since it's really not neccisary for a server to have a nice GUI :))

As for software, use linux's networking stuff (duh) and iptables for the firewall.
Sendmail is probably the best for SMTP and maybe qpopper for POP3.
Webserver, definitly apache then whatever addons you'd like (perl, php, and whatnot).

As for books, look around in amazon.com and check out the o`reilly books.

I'm no expert, but I think your firewall/router box has to have 2 nics in it. One for your connection to the internet, and one for your internal connection to the web & mail servers, through a hub/switch.

Like I said, I'm no networking expert by any means, but I believe this is how its done.

Linuxdoc.org has a network guide that covers a lot of the basics for setting up router, gateways, firewalls, mail server, et cetera. Should be useful: http://www.linuxdoc.org/LDP/nag2/index.html
