sound card config?

how do i know if my sound card is configured right.
i hear sound whenever i close or maximize screens,
but when i try to run xmms it tells me to check and see
if the card is configured. im currently running redhat7.
i have used this same sound card (diamond monster 400)
with mandrake7.2

i have seen this message to on redhat 6.2, slack7.0 and debian. I tried it again right away and it worked.
