I use both Debian and FreeBSD, they both have their merits and are both very stable. I think if it weren't for lack of Nvidia 3d driver support for FreeBSD, I would use it almost exclusively. They are actually similar in methodology, i.e. they both have slick methods for grabbing current software, keeping the system 'current' (of course this can also be a bad thing, as anyone who's typed 'apt-get upgrade' and hosed their system can attest, but I digress) and I like the philosophy behind each. I say grab a bootdisk set from ftp.freebsd.org (ftp://ftp.freebsd.org) and go for it! My recommendation would be to start learning BSD with a spare box, and I think you'll find that you want to switch your server/firewall platform over to BSD...just my experience, YMMV. Luck!
