Well I now have a linux box running Mandrake 8.0. It's a p233 w/64mb of ram on a dsl connection in my home network. What can I do with it? Run a ftp perhaps? Suggestions?

I have plans to set-up a similer system. I'm going to make my gigabytes of MP3s accesible, so that I can listin to them at work, or when I away.

Unless you're one of those lunatic gamers that has to have the top of the line video/sound/etc hardware (remember, sound is sound, dammit ;) ), your box is fine for most of what you'll want to do. Sure, at times it might be slow, but I just upgraded from that system (233 amd +64 meg), and still use it often. Where did I get my new box? My friend that claims windows is the best, and can't run his new system on anything less than a 1+gig with 256M ram without problems.

It was free... :D

You can do anything with that box.

I'm running a P300 with 128MBs of RAM, and I use it for surfing, email, ripping mp3s, homework, http and ftp servers, etc.

Mandrake 8.0 should be able to sufficiently satisfy any needs you may have as a home user. On the plus side, things like apache and proftpd come pre-set up, all you have to do is install the RPM and away you go :)

You might notice it being kinda slow if you run a wm like KDE or Gnome, though... go for blackbox :)

just a little tip from a user using mandrake 8 on the same exact setup: don't use kde... it'll crawl... you should use that system as a great web/music server with blackbox gui (for easy maintainence)

Before I started streaming mp3's, I would take the time to learn the system. And there's a lot to learn.

Plug all the holes with silicon sealer and see if it floats.
