Prisoner 01-24-2001, 09:59 PM thankx i just wanted something to play with and learn hands on. any pointers? Just foolin around getting used to Linux? Want to be separated for the time being from the guts of Linux? Probably RedHat (or Mandrake from what I see in the forums). Want a baptism of fire? Jump right in and get filthy? Debian or Slackware should be up to the task of kicking your ***. But that's the way you learn. I started with a few versions of Redhat and then tried my hand with Storm Linux (debian). I have to say that Craig is right....apt-get rox! P.S. The Get A Good Book (GAGB) advice suggested recently in another forum is great advice. Perhaps you could pick up a good book that also included some CDs with a distro on it? Hope that stuff about localhost - 127.0.0.1 didn't put you off, we were just joking around. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif I think you will find all the OTHER forums on LNO to be quite helpful. As a token of good faith, I would be happy to supply you with a download copy of linux. i have one corel 1.1 if you want it, just email me a mailing address. it is a very easy to install distribution and quite compatible with lots of hardware. I have used just about all the distributions available. If you are coming out of the windows world, welcome home. You are about to learn to live without system freezes, the blue screen of death and that annoying little error message that reads, "your program has committed an illegal function and will be shut down, all data will be lost". Coming from a windows background the absolute easiest distro to set up and use is Corel but it is also the weakest. If you are looking for an easy to set up full power distro Mandrake and Caldera are two of the best. If you have not used linux or unix before do yourself a favor and buy a boxed set. They are only about thirty bucks and the documentation is well worth the price. Mandrake includes about $150.00 worth of popular linux books on CD in PDF format. They alone are worth the price of the boxed set. With these two distros you can be up and running in short order. Later, if you want to get your hands dirty and get into the guts of the system all you have to do is click on the terminal icon. From there you can practice using the command line. If all you are interested is a slick running stable system with a real fine GUI, you will probably be able to do almost everything without ever touching the command line. Mandrake linux is optimized to run on pentium machines. If you have an older 486, Caldera open linux works just fine. You will need to have 64 meg of ram on whatever machine you have or xwindows runs soooo slow. Once you decide what distro you want to try, before you buy log onto their web site and download their hardware compatability list. Make sure the equipment in your computer is supported by the distro you want to install. If you have any unsupported hardware in your computer, replace it. Two of the biggest problems newbys have installing linux is incompatable hardware and insufficient memory. After you become more familier with the OS this will cease to be a problem because you will eventually learn how to install drivers and there are drivers out there for just about any hardware. One of the greatest features of linux is that you can design the system to do what you want it to do instead of what microsoft tells you it can do. It is incredibly flexable which also means it's more complex and the learning curve is steeper. That has nothing to do with getting the system up and being productive. With Mandrake or Caldera you can set up a very productive system without being a tech head. If you are a geek at heart and really like to spread your wings you have limitless options. I have a friend who designed his own disk and file format. Its the ultimate security feature. If hackers break into his system they can't even read his drive. I hope this rambling has been some help to you. Remember, read the installation instructions take your time and above all, have fun. Your computer is your personal gateway to the world and it should work the way you do and be fun to use. Linux Rules, Microsoft Drools.
