Kinda funny too: the GNU people are supposed to abhor any software that's not free, yet -atleast in the main page- the page source says it was made with Netscape. (?) (content="Mozilla/4.74 [en] (X11; U; Linux 2.4.0 i686) [Netscape])

In hindsight I should've explained myself better.
I meant to also ask whether this -you think- was made by hand, and/or if an application exists to format/output such great looking (IMO) charcters.

I wish I could code my own.
No time. No knowledge. Wouldn't know where to start.

I don't know about logos like the one you're wanting but if you want some cool as funk logos, use gimp and some of the scripts they package with it. Just found those the other day.

You might find it interesting that Gimp has a plugin, AA-lib (Ascii Art) that will turn a graphic file into an ascii art equivalent.
