Ok I have a Belkins usb travel mouse. It is going into my sony vaio Pcg-Fx370 model laptop. I have already downloadeed and up dated the new kernel release for Red Hat 8.0 pro yesterday.

Here is the weird thing, after installing the new kernel the mouse worked. Under /proc/devices/usb it is being recognized as a usb/ps2 combo mouse. It is also being detected as a sypress mouse. Upon using the mouse however it seems to time out. The mouse will function for approx. 5 mins then stop. I went in to examine the problem and saw that the mouse was detected in the usb port, then after 5 mins it was dumped.

Does anyone have any ideas? My Kernel boot options are set as follows

NOPCMCIA=yes pci=biosirq hda=ide-scsi

The Bios is Pheneoix (sp?) and approx a 7 months old.

Could the Network card and the usb mouse be having a conficting IRQ? I thought about this after the mouse froze instantly upon plugging the onboard network card into an active patch cable.

(Network is DHCP) I will be posting with my /var/logs/boot.log soon as well as the messages from the USB device.

I appreciate any help, thanks.

Best to first have a look through /var/log/boot.log and /var/log/messages to see if you can spot the problem.

Are you running the console mouse driver (GPM)?

ps ax | grep gpm

That is known to cause conflicts with the X mouse driver.

I'll check that tonight and get back to you tommrow. I have looked at all those and saw no problem at all. Boot.log says the USb mouse was started fine, as well as the hotplugging devices and USB ports. I forgot to check the messages log, I'll do that tonight.
