Thanks, Karl. FoBoT 08-09-2001, 12:48 PM they are just different, not better or worse, it is subjective, unless you list specific objective criteria to differentiate between them i use KDE have a nice day! :) KarlOldman 08-09-2001, 12:49 PM So far, I have been using KDE I quite like it (Im not using it now Im on my main machine) ut I want to see who else uses it. or even GNOME danrees 08-09-2001, 01:11 PM KDE is more like windows. GNOME can be like windows if you want it to be. That's the difference for me, GNOME's more configurable (you can choose your window manager). And GNOME seems to be a lot speedier on SuSE 7.2 than KDE, but I have both installed. ethereal 08-09-2001, 01:14 PM I use gnome, because A) I like Nautilus (bloated but works nice) although I do use the console for my file management. B) I like Enlightenment(window manager) I believe it will work with KDE also, however. C) I like the look of gtk, which gnome uses. D) I dislike the look of qt, which KDE uses. E) I dislike how much KDE is similer to windows, with naming programs KWord or their attempt to make KDE very similer to windows. F) Gnibbles rocks :). That's why I use Gnome, your mileage may vary. You should just install and use both, then see which one you like better. Necro Lin 08-09-2001, 01:45 PM Gnome all the way....as mentioned above it's very easy to switch between window manager like windowmaker, enlightment :D , etc... I just find it easier to use and I like the way it looks. Once you set it all up you can make Gnome look real sweet. I do have KDE on my computer too, but I just don't like it....but to each his own right? My suggestion...try both...see which one you like...and stay with that. ;) Lovechild 08-09-2001, 01:50 PM A matter of taste... Mind says : GNOME, for using less ressources Heart says : KDE, for being easiest to use on a daily basics. Soo I follow my heart. TacKat 08-09-2001, 02:27 PM I like my layout clean and functional, so I don't use either :p L.I. Surfer 08-09-2001, 02:30 PM KDE...i just want to get stuff done... Dave's not here 08-09-2001, 04:01 PM :) WindowMaker :) uriah.k 08-09-2001, 04:20 PM They are both good in some areas and lousy in others, so using both(not at the same time of course) is a good idea. And yes, the suggestion of just plain window maker is an excellent idea. You can use gnome and kde programs with window maker! And window maker looks nice, is quick(relative term of course) is easy to configure and learn, and just plain kicks ***! scratchmonkey 08-09-2001, 04:33 PM I'd have to agree that both have their ups and downs. I tend to think KDE looks too much like Windows, but if that is what you like...go for it. I run a Ximian/Gnome desktop, with Sawfish as my Window Manager. In the end, it's a matter of preference really. Go with what you like :) ---tom ZinovyLR 08-09-2001, 04:37 PM Personally I use GNOME for the following reasons. 1) It takes up less resources 2) I like GNOME software and hate KDE software. 3) Gnome is much more configurable than KDE. 4) With GNOME you have many different types of themes since you can use about five different window managers while in KDE you can only use one type of window manager (natively) with skins that dont really look too good. How ever if you are new to Linux I suggest you use KDE. Its file browser is very newbie centered. justlinux.com
