How can I fix this? It it a setting or something deeper?

Is it.. Galeon? Galeon is the only browser I know that will ask you which protocols you want to use (and thus allowing you to disable https), definitely.. most browsers these days have https support. This is not a matter of your desktop enviroment or windows manager, it depends on your browser exclusively. What are you using? Check the preferences.. can you 'enable/disable' protocols (the main ones used by Browsers are http, https and ftp)? If it's Galeon.. well, I could reinstall it or maybe rerun the initial wizard to choose https support (haven't tried it) and if it's not.. then you probably have some obscure unknown browser... because as far as I know https is commonly supported nowadays.

if you play around in the preferences of Konquerer, you'll get a message saying "This build of KDE does not support SSL." Basically, you can't use Konquerer to do anything like online banking or email. It really sucks for me because I'm at school, behind a firewall that requires me to enter a username/password, which is sent securely to our authentication server.

Basically, you just can't use Konquerer. Find a different brower... I usually use Mozilla.
