I just installed Linux Redhat 8 as a file server. I am trying to connect it to my current Windows XP LAN. My Current LAN has a router 192.168.10.1, 4 Workstations 192.168.10.100-103. Default Gateway is 255.255.255.0. I am doing the Static IP thing.

Should I assign my Linux file server an IP of 192.168.10.104? or do the DHCP thing? Would that mean that I turn off DHCP on my router? Can I use my Linux box as a Firewall for the Network in any of these senarios?

I am open to any suggestions on how I might proceed in the best way.

Thanks for your time!

For a network under 10 machines, use static IP addressing. I use a Redhat 8 server as my web proxy/firewall, as well as a samba file server. Works like a champ and keeps my venerable windoze boxes safe from the big bad Internet.

Is your router a DSL router? If so use dhcp as the routing/firewall is handled by the hardware router. If you are dial-up, use the linuxbox as a router/firewall and turn off NAT and DHCP on the router. Just my two cents..
