couple of questions

first off, the resolution in x is set to 1280x1024. but it looks grainy, and really crappy. does anyone know how to make it look better? second, are there any mp3 or cd players that you can use from just the CLI, and not need x?

In /etc/XF86Config set DefaultColorDepth to 24.

the console mp3 player is mpg123

Raise the color depth, raise the refresh rate if possible, drop the resolution. A lot of monitors will not display properly at 1280x1024. My monitor is pretty decent but it still gets a little fuzzy at 1280x1024. The recommended resolution is 1024x768 but it still looks good at 1115x842.
