Go get it. ------------------ Got Konq (http://www.konqueror.org/)? skweegie 01-04-2001, 09:21 PM hehe, they're still uploading the bunzip when i hit kernel.org http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif vvx 01-04-2001, 09:31 PM It hit ftp.linux.org.uk first before kernel.org, they might have the bz.. armando86 01-04-2001, 09:31 PM Sweet! Now can someone tell me when the mirrors will be updated? Kernel.org is being Slashdotted as we speak. ------------------ majorpayne201@yahoo.com "In a world without walls who needs windows?" A_Lawn_GNOME 01-04-2001, 09:59 PM I got it! I got it! Yeah, I really do got it. Sweeeeet... Now, get the reiserfs patch or whatever and I will be very, very happy. If anyone needs me I will be locked away compiling and then recompiling to make sure it's true. X_Entity 01-04-2001, 10:03 PM I only just downloaded the pre-release no I gotta go get the real thing as well. My modems never seen so much action. SubPar 01-04-2001, 10:10 PM X_Entity: Just get the patch (ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/testing/prerelease-diff) instead. ------------------ Got Konq (http://www.konqueror.org/)? ph34r 01-04-2001, 10:46 PM I just got it from ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4/linux-2.4.0.tar.bz2 and the server was plenty fast - 125+kb/sec JAdrock 01-04-2001, 11:02 PM got it, compiled it...and it doesn't provide anything better for me, than what 2.2.17 did, so for now, I'm going to stick with 2.2.17 until emu10k1 drivers in 2.2.18 or 2.4.0 get fixed. (no bass/treble/digital mixer options from either of those kernels) Tigger 01-05-2001, 01:36 AM For the RedHat 7 users out there. I am currently running the new official 2.4.0 as I'm typing this. Make sure you upgrade all the bugfixes from RedHat before you attempt it as the original gcc that shipped with it will not work. No hickups at all. Backed up the /boot directory and all the 2.2.16 modules first in case of issues. Did the following: make xconfig make dep make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install && make install Had to manually add the new kernel to lilo as it was pointing to vmlinuz-2.2.12-22. Re-ran lilo and rebooted. The whole process including downloading took 45 minutes. I have a cable modem and my cpu is an AMD K6-2/500 with 96M ram. Just my personal experience with it! Hope it helps some of you. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BOOT DISK AND BACKUP YOUR CURRENT KERNEL AND MODULES BEFORE YOU START. JUST IN CASE YOU FORGET SOMETHING IN THE NEW KERNEL CONFIG. Good Luck http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif jief 01-05-2001, 01:53 AM Originally posted by JAdrock: got it, compiled it...and it doesn't provide anything better for me, than what 2.2.17 did, so for now, I'm going to stick with 2.2.17 until emu10k1 drivers in 2.2.18 or 2.4.0 get fixed. Jeff A_Lawn_GNOME 01-05-2001, 07:56 AM Using RH7 here, even though I got there gcc update, I used kgcc just to be safe. You do that by modifying the toplevel makefile like the RH docs say too (find anything labeled gcc and switch it). The only hiccup I have is ipchains. The option is grayed out for some reason. Anyone know why this might be happening? I turned on every other option and it still didn't let me choose it. I also didn't know that the rtl8139 driver has changed to 8139too.o . I don't really see any important reason to change. I suppose they have to do funny things like that to keep the newbie population down tho http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif . Tigger 01-05-2001, 09:58 AM ALG - from what I know, 2.4 uses something new for the rules. I can't remember what it is at the moment but it should be fine. As far as GCC and KGCC goes, the official word on this is that egcs should be used to compile the kernel cause there aren't any gcc versions that are recommended to be used to compile the kernel. The updated gcc worked okay for me. A_Lawn_GNOME 01-05-2001, 10:15 AM The new firewall tool is netfilter or something like that. There is an option for it to be backwards compatible but it is grayed out. I just have to find what to patch to get it. skweegie 01-05-2001, 10:57 AM Originally posted by A_Lawn_GNOME: The new firewall tool is netfilter or something like that. Unfortunately, after that small step, I found my NVidia kernel driver will not compile for 2.4 so that is the end of it. (spits out an error about missing functions right after telling me post 2.2 kernels aren't supported). I don't think there is a chance at fudging this one. I'll have to wait for nvidia to get a new update out or someone put out a hack. *Sigh* it was fun while it lasted. Might still use it on my firewall box though. A_Lawn_GNOME 01-05-2001, 01:47 PM There is a patch for the NVidia drivers. The link and instructions are over at http://www.linuxgames.com . The instructions are in the comments. Works so far... justlinux.com
