ya.....it has a big red X at the eth0 and then i go to set it up in x windows "root" it then has a green check at start up and then i go to the inter. and try to do anything this is what comes up................................................ ........................................netscape is unable to locate the server home.netscape.com please check the server name and try agin.............................................. ........................................and then .....warning:the following hosts are unknown
home.netscape.com
home6.netscape.com
internic.net
unreachable.

then it sed perhaps problum whith your server may need to set the $SOCKS_NS environment variable to point at the appropriate name server.........................that is what it tells me

i know nuthing of what it is telling me..........i so new at this

That might be a problem with you shadow file.
look for /etc/shadow
post it here
umm.......just joking.

ok....
is it activated?
do you have name servers defined?

do a
>ifconfig eth0
what does it say

and
>more /etc/resolv.conf
are any name servers listed..it should look like
search domain1 domain2
namserver ipaddr1
.
.

something to that effect.

or you can try running linuxconf or netconf
i forget exactly what they do....

MY GOD i HATE how you write, but i'll still help you http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

also, something like this should be in the Networking forum.

1) describe your setup, my guess is your running in X (X is graphical), if that is the case, only mandrake people can help you. If you are willing to go into the console (X... i cant remember what it called, i suck. um.. Xcon? Xcons? Xcmdl?) look for something like that) then more people can help. If/when u get into the console type 'ifconfig eth0' and check the info that is there. Is the ip right? if you not sure try pinging something. type 'ping www.excite.com' (http://www.excite.com') or anything. if it says 'pinging eee.excite.com [some ip address]
fail
fail
fail' Then u know that you can connect to your DNS servers, w00t. It sounds like you cant do that, so you are going to want to add those in. as root open your /etc/resolv.conf file and type in your nameserver IPs (look at what xerid said) If this stuff is beyond you... you should probebly wait and get used to the command line (command line is the same for almost everyone, but the graphical part can be custumized and be very different)
