Whenever I try to install Mandrake 8.2 I succumb to the same problem, I get through the install, well and good, but then, when I boot the first time, it asks me what I want to boot with, I choose linux, and it just goes to a black screen asking for the login name and password, and I just want to zoom right to KDE or Gnome, but I don't know how to, I have seen people saying "Type startx" and such, but I don't want to have to do this everytime, yes it appears lazy, but to me, I just want it to boot straight to the GUI, I have hated this problem, and I really want to use linux, but this problem always makes me reformat the HD it is on, so please, give me some information that may tell me what I am doing in the installation that gives me this, and not KDE.

When you type "startx" does X start? If it does and you dont have any errors or crashes then you just need to edit your default runlevel from 3 to 5 .

Great, I reinstalled, and when I try "StartX" it says

execve failed for /etc/x11/x(Errno 2)
execve failed for /edt/x11/giving up
/xinit: No such file or directory(Errno 2): Unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process(Errno 3): Server Error

Then it gave lots of errors with things like "Setroot" for example, like

Xsetroot: Unable to open display ''

AND EVEN WORSE!

I CAN'T GET TO WINDOWS!
This is very aggrivating, please help!

Is there some way to get to windows, and get rid of linux for the timebeing, at least so I can determine what the problem is?

Using the DOS command
fdisk /mbr
