I would like to know how to setup a two computer network. I see that there are a couple of NHF's for SAMBA and APACHE, but they both assume that I know something about networking. What I want to do is to play with a two computer network running APACHE, sendmail, SAMBA, an FTP server and whatever normal network services are common so that whatever I learn can be applied to a larger network sometime in the future. Right now, I don't even know how to setup the host name on one box. If there is a document somewhere else, a link would be spiffy.

What kind of network are you trying to setup, Windows & Linux or Linux only? Need more info.

Linux to Windows first, to make sure clients can connect using what they currently have. later on, I will add a Linux client to make sure I can change them over to a new OS.

Well, the linux side of things won't matter if the linux box is to be a server. The big thing is: Are you going to use a hub or just a patch cable? A patch cable is a specially configured cable to directly connect two Nics together.

The easiest way to set up the network is to go into Linuxconf and input your stuff thier. just assign IP address to each machine and bind them to the machine's ethernet card, presumably eth0. An easy one is to use 198.168.11.xx where xx is a number between 1 and 99. Use a netmask of 255.255.255.0 for both computers. As long as the link lights on both computers light up and you gave a differnt ip address to each they should be connected. Try ping to access the other machine to make sure everything is all right.

After that it is just a matter of setting up the server apps and clients.

I am using a hub. Network connectivity is the easiest part. Normally that is setup on the install. The help I need is with the server apps. A couple of these apps require a certain network configuration, and that is where I get confused. Yes, ping works, so the basic connectivity is there. Right now it is using DHCP. What if I wanted to specify an IP? What changes need to be made? The network setup done during the install is obviously not what the NHF's for the server apps assume you have. How does it differ? Case in point from the APACHE NHF:

"First off, having Apache installed and running is required. "
