We've got a Linux 6.2 server that runs apache, sendmail, ipchains, imap, &c. Twice in the past few months we've had a situation where ps -ef | grep pop3 will show several ipop3d processes with user root, don't change over to the actual POP3 user's name, and the user's mail client (usually Outlook) times out.
Remote users flash through quickly, first as root then with their own userid as expected.
Last time it happened nobody could get mail from anywhere. This am remote users could get their mail fine & would flash through the ps -ef showing their actual login name, BUT users on the LAN just stuck there with the user name root.
Both times we've been stumped, have done /etc/rc.d/inetd restart or stop & start after killing all the hung processes. Eventually the problem clears up, but we're clueless as to what is happening.
Any ideas or directions about preventing/solving this will be appreciated.
