I just read in Linux Today (www.linuxtoday.com) an article on the soon to come (isn't that what they've been saying for over a year now) linux kernel 2.4, they quote the new kernel as a 25mb monster. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/eek.gif Is this true? I thought the thinking behind the kernel was that it be a lean, powerful piece of code. Where do Linus thinks he is going turning the kernel into a 25mb beast?
I don't claim to know a whole lot to what goes on in the linux kernel project, but what I'd really like to see is to keep Linux from bloating up like a certain OS based up in Redmond.

Well, as far as I can tell, it includes a lot of optioins which makes it highly configurable. I've been running the 2.4-test11 kernel and it's overall performance seems to be a bit snappier than my previous 2.2.17.
So perhaps the code is leaner but there's more hardware support, etc, with the upcoming 2.4.

What do you mean by 25mb,bzImage or tarball?Ha, the full source tree after uncompressing is over 100mb.How's that,to enable new features the code must be extended, no?And i'm sure Linux will not go the *other OS* route, that's for sure.I have no problems with the kernel source be it 1mb or 1000 as long as it gives me the support i'd expect from it.end...

That 's the tarball size -- the 25M.

I'm sure the article was talking about either A: a kernel with support for everything that it possibly can, or B: the compressed source for the kenrel.
I think my kernel is near 500k or more, seeing as I had to add in 3dfx stuff, soundblaster live and what not...

That 25MB Compressed / 100+ MB uncompressed after configure and compile = to anywhere from 150 - 750KB in size final. The rest is ignored. So what are you crying about? Compile what you need and trash the rest! Duh! It's still smaller than windows, but not as small as BeOS.
That's like these not-so-brights screaming... my Mandrake install is 1.2GB! Yeah and you installed about 500 - 600KB of kernel and the rest is software! Duh! Sorry I am not having a very happy day and I feel a bit hostile......
But damn people THINK!!!!!

Yeah, I mean, consider the fact that that kernel source will run on like 10 different architectures and support 100s of different pieces of hardware hardware, and you realize that a 25MB download for those capabilities is a luxury.
