This isn't a linux problem really, but I'm pretty desparate for some help.
I have a three year old modem, 56K. The company that made it is out of business. It used to work, but after I moved a few months ago, it doesn't connect. It dials.. waits, and then disconnects. With a particular phone number, it connects at 26K however (it's a 56K number).
After determining that my phone lines were fine, I picked up a winmodem with HSF rockwell chipset. In windows, it connects at like 49K with any phone number.
I brought home another winmodem based on the same chipset, with good results again (in windows of course).
So I went out and bought an actiontec ISA Master 56K (has lucent chipset). It will connect maybe 1 out of 20 times. Looking at the log, it dials and makes noises, then stops making noises and the scripts waits for the "CONNECT" string, but it never happens.. and then redials. This happens in both windows and linux.
What is wrong???? Is there a problem with lucent chipsets??
