Argh! I have been trying for weeks to install Linux on my laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro 420CDS) with no luck! Now I have it working (textually) but when I startx (as root) I get:
Fatal Server Error:
Could not create lock file in /tmp/.tX0-lock
Can anyone shed any light on this and suggest a way round it? Also if anyone has a working XF86Config file for this laptop please send me a link!
Thanks
Shaun

Not sure what the error means though you could search at Google for the message.
Have you tried http://www.linux-laptop.net/ to see if your laptop is listed and if so, you may find some configuration examples etc.

Yeah I looked at linux-laptop - no luck theres no entry for my laptop... one close (the 425) but even then theres no config files - just some general guides which I used to no avail :(

Here's the Google results (http://www.google.com/linux?site=search&restrict=linux&hl=en&lr=lang_en&safe=off&q=Could+not+create+lock+file+in+%2Ftmp%2F.tX0-lock&btnG=Google+Search) for the error message.
Hopefully the answer is there somewhere.

Trust me on this one - I spent the last week trying to figure this s**t out! I have read every forum, FAQ, online doc I can find (to the point of not doing ANY work the last 2 days!) and I'm still stuck and getting more and more frustrated at my "linux experience".
But at the end of the day, I AM a newbie and am just trying to get some help from the big boys! :-)
Unfortunately the help on google didnt help - one article showed promise but the same error still appears (see above), despite the commands actually executing without error.
AAARRRGGGGHHHH!!! BACK TO WINDOZZZZZ!!!!!
