I'm really sorry for something that is probably really stupid and obivious but for a 12 yo with 30 minutes linux experience I would love this answered :)

I installed redhat 8 without too many problems, went custom (glad I did) I choose Gnome and KDE for desktop. Problem is it keeps defaulting to Gnome I would like KDE instead. I've tried running the wizard but it says it needs to restart X window.

Would love some help :)

So, did you restart XWindows? ctrl-alt-backspace should do it.

I can't really give you any help other than that since I don't know RedHat. I'm sure someone else around here knows.

In my short time using 8.0, Gnome & KDE are one in the same. Red Hat has "blended" the two together with that version. I tried everything, even choosing not to install Gnome & Bluecurve and just couldn't get rid of the Gnome look & feel.

If you really want the "true" KDE, I would suggest either installing 7.3 or another distro altogether.

when you choose, manualy, to boot KDE, doesn't a dialog box come and say if you want this to be your default? i think it should, or this doesn't happen on KDM?

If it doesn't boot manually into KDE, as root, then go into the control centre, of KDE. and choose the default menu from there. I can't remember the exact place, but the option is there somewhere.

or if it is GDM, then loginto gnome, as root, then from the menu choose GDM configurator, and set it up properly. again i'm not sure exactly where it is. need to use your noodles a bit. :D

I think you can just run "switchdesk kde" in a terminal, restart X, then go and change the theme to something other than Bluecurve...not 100% sure but that's what I would try...

If you machine boots to the graphical interface, It should give you a graphical logon screen. At the very bottom it has a tab labled (session). Click on that and change it to KDE. It then will ask you if you want to make your selection your default desktop. If you are booting to a shell or command line there is a command that lets you go directly into kde. I cant remember it tho. I'll get back to ya.
