I'm pretty sure I installed samba last night, I used the 2nd cd that came with Red hat6 .. But I cant figure out how to find my win2k server vice versa. I can telnet back and fourth from each machine, but I want to set up file sharing, And see each other in net hood. What do I have to load on the 2k box? some kind of client software I'm guessing .. Please advise

Thanks
Mike

You don't need to setup Win2k in any special way (well, atleast the way I did it). You need to configure SAMBA. Here's a little smb.conf that should get you up and running.

netbios name = LINUXWHAT
workgroup = workgroup
security = share

[whatever]
path = /samba
guest ok = yes
writeable = true

If you want to configure it more, check out: http://us2.samba.org/samba/docs/man/smb.conf.5.html

that is good, that means you are half way there, your net is good

you have to configure samba on your linux box. on my w2k, i added a user that matches the accounts on my linux box, and matching passwords

two things to help with samba config

plus search the forums on samba, there have been many before you that fought the samba dragon!

what if I just use root? I made a user on my 2k box root, with same password as RH box

Dont think it will let root in from an outside the box connection. Just use the user that you setup on your initial install or whatever account that you use most often. Go to the user icon in Control panel and setup a user with the same username and password. If you want to connect based on names instead of ip's, make sure you have a valid host file made with ip to name mapping.
