The Quake 1 and 2 engines are free (as in speech -- they're open-source), but the data still isn't. You can get the demo version of the data for the cost of a download, though. There should be instructions on both of these somewhere...

If you have the Windows Quake3 CDs, you can use the Linux point release off Id's FTP site to get it installed natively in Linux, or so I hear at least.

If you have the RtCW CDs, the installer is free.

If you have the UT (the original) CDs, the installer is free.

Hmm.... there really isn't much that's entirely free, is there...

Well the only one I know of that is completely free is cube and it is a pretty cool little game. much like quake 2. I'd give you a link but I'm too lazy to look it up right now. I know they list it on happypenguin.org.
