I've got an old Compaq Prolinea 4/66. I hook it up to a monitor, but the output is very dim, to the point of being impossible to read. The monitor works just fine with any other computer I connect it to--it's just the Compaq that has problems. Is there anything I can do about this, or am I just screwed as far as the Compaq goes?

You can try upping the gamma value...
xgamma -gamma 1.7 or so. The default is 1.0, and higher is brighter.

Well, I could, except this isn't a Linux problem :) Text output to the monitor is unreadable at any time, even during the self-tests before any operating system is loaded, and then it is still unreadable regardless of what operating system is loaded.

Since the monitor works fine with other pc's, I guess you have no choice but to replace the video card.
You could try cleaning the inside of the case, take out the video card and clean the contacts etc. Of course that is if not a integrated video card.
