question:
How hard is it to get streaming video on my freshly installed netscape?
I've made sure that the realplayer plugin can be found in the netscape/plugin subdir© I've tried to fiddle around with the >edit>preference>navigator>helper applications, but to no avail© Why am I making this so damn complicated?

Are you sure that the netscrape helper apps are properly pointed to your realplayer executable, and that you have read/write permissions on that file/directory/tree. Also, are you sure it's [Netscape's prefs] set up with the correct syntax for realmedia formats? I think the most common ones are: .rm .ra .ram
I'm sure someone here can help you setting those up (I hate netscape prefs, 'sides, I don't even have linux installed now :( :o )

I had no problems with RealPlayer 8. I didn't even have to configure it. But how did you install it? I did it one of two ways.
Method 1. As the regular user, run the installer. It will eventually prompt you about mime/plugin install. Make sure you say yes, then finish the install. When you do an "ls ~/.netscape/plugins" you should have the following files: raclass.zip rpnp.so Note that this will install the binaries into your home directory.
Method 2. Because I wanted to make reaplayer available to all users without having them install it in their home directory, I ran the installer as root and had it install in /usr/local/share/RealPlayer8. A normal user then needs to go to /usr/local/share/RealPlayer8 and run mimeinstall.sh and pluginstall.sh
In either case, you need to close down netscape if it's open and then reopen it again. On the Location bar, type "about :plugins" (no quotes). You should see RealPlayer listed in there somewhere.

Hi! I'm using netscape 6.0 and I have realplayer8 installed.
Here's what I did. Edit->Preferences->Helper Applications->New Type:
Description of Type: RealAudio
File extension:rmm,ram
MIME type:audio/x-pn-realaudio
Application to use: /usr/lib/RealPlayer8/realplay
I do not know if this is the right way but it worked for me and I was able to watch streaming video and audio as well.
Hope this helps!! :p
