When I try to use the Disk Writer plug-in for XMMS, I get the following error message:

"Couldn't Open Audio. Please check that:
1. You have teh correct output plugin selected
2. No other programs is blocking the soundcard
3. Your soundcard is configured properly.

But, it works fine when I log in as root. ?? No hitch at all. It makes me think it's a permissions problem.

I did a chmod 777 on:
1. /dev/dsp
2. /dev/dsp1
3. /dev/mixer
4. /dev/mixer1
5. /dev/audio
6. /dev/audio1

What am I missing?

I can't hardly believe that no one out there has not had this problem and found a fix. Anyone??

I am currently using SUSE 8 and have the same problem you are describing. I simply have to disable the System Notifications in the contol panel and then I can use the player. Must be using the same resources.

Thanks! I've had that same kinda thing happen to me with the KDE desktop sound. Disable it and everything is okay. But... not this time. Didn't work.

I still think it's a permission problem, but I can't locate it. Why would it work in root (with KDE up and running full sound, et al), and not in greg (user)? Has to be permissions... but, where?

Thanks, again!

Sorry my suggestion didn't help you. I am all tapped out of ideas. I have just recently started using linux (about 1 month) and my level of skill is just not adequate for troubleshooting.

Good Luck!

Hey, we're in the same boat, man. I installed Red Hat 7.2 on a little over a month ago. Love it! With all the hassles, for some reason, I'm just enamoured with my Penguin System.

I've heard good things about SuSE. Hope you're enjoying it!

I got another post on another thread in another forum...
ERoaster solves the problem in one fell swoop. It burns audio CDs with a drag-and-drop of an mp3 file. No mp3 to WAV conversion necessary. If you want it, check it out at SourceForge. Looks like a solid program.

But, I ain't giving up on XMMS. Gotta get the thing working now that I know it's not! :-)
