I am trying to set up a mail server at my location, I have fixed IP and DSL connection. But my domain (URL) is being hosted somewhere else on a different server. Can I still setup the mailserver at my location. Do I need to set up the DNS?
Could someone please tell me what I need to do this.
Someone told me to change the MX, what is MX? And what should I put there,
I would greatly appreciate any help.
thank you again

Contact whomever hosts your webpage and have them add your computer's name/ip to the global DNS tables.
Usually Internic / Network solutions does this, but your provider may be able to.
Example www.website.com (http://www.website.com) = your webpage on Bob's provider service
add xxx.yyy.zzz.qqq(ip address) mail.website.com (your computer name) to the DNS tables usually in an hour or so the global tables update.

There was no need to start another thread on the same question.
Saying that.
An MX record is a Mail Exchange record that directs email addresses such as you@yourdomain.com to the email server. Your DNS server will resolve what is after the @ and direct it to you mail servers IP.
Mail servers dont work without an MX record pointing to it.

Are you planning on setting up your own DNS or having a service make an MX entry for you?
If you are setting up your own theres kind of alot to it. You must first have a domain name(I assume you do). You then have to register your DNS server as a host with Network Solutions with your static and the name of the host. Then your domain must be registered with your DNS server as the name server for that domain through Network Solutions. Then your ready to configure your DNS server for name and MX resolution.
If your planning on whoever is serving your site to hook you up with an MX just call em up and give them the IP you want your MX record pointing to.
If none of these suit I know Dynip (if you pay 130 a year will set you up with an MX record) but I like running my own.
