I'm trying to boot up and older machine that has Red Hat on it. It is giving me and unclean shutdown then going into the file check. It comes up with a message UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY: run fsck manually. I have tried to run fsck with serveral keys, it says changes made. When I reboot I get the same message. Some one gave me this older computer to learn about linux. Seems like it will be the hard way!!!

Also, welcome to LNO, and welcome to linux...
You might want to try fsck /dev/hda1 or /dev/hda2 depending on what your / is on.
Good Luck and again, welcome aboard!

How are you shutting down? You can't just hit the power button, if that's what you're doing...
