I read that post a couple down from this one about RPM dependencies (since I had a BAD experience with them things just yesterday - for hours).

1. I logged onto www.freshrpms.net and that alt synaptic thing looked too complicated to figure out without more coffee.

2. I ran up2date on my RedHat 7.2 system.

Along with a ton of wee little updates to thinks like grip, it gave me 3 suggested updates to my kernel.

Now, that's scary to a BSN (Big Stinkin' Newbie). And I'm a BSN. If I download those Kernel updates with up2date, will up2date install, reconfigure, et al just like all by itself??? Or am I getting in over my head with a re-compiling issue here?

Anyone done a Kernel update with up2date?

Several. It comes in a package, like all the other RH packages, and gets put in it's place. All you need to do is reboot and choose the new kernel.

You don't need to do any compiling... It's already done. RH configs/compiles a pretty stock kernel that should work on your system. If it doesn't, the original kernel is still there, so you reboot and pick it. It looks like you have two versions of Linux to choose from in LILO/GRUB. Which you really do.

I have 8.0 running on my laptop, with the two kernels available... 2.4.18-14 (loaded at install), and 2.4.18-17.8.0 (load from up2date). Don't ask me about RH's version numbers. I have the source for 2.4.19, but haven't done anything with it, yet. After I do, I'll have three choices in GRUB.

It's kind of like having different clothes... The standard is jeans and a shirt. If you want to get flashy, you might get a suit. Or, if you want to be faster on your bike, you might get spandex shorts and shirt. You choose which to put on in the morning, and can change anytime you want by taking off one and putting on another. RH will supply you with the jeans and a shirt, and will upgrade you eventually with a new set, but they still only give you jeans and a shirt. If you want to wear something else, you have to get it yourself.
