Hi all,
I'm trying to ftp a file to my RD 7.1, but there doesnt seem to be a connection running! I searched for ftpd but couldnt find it! Any idea how to start the ftp daemon, and where to find it?
btw - doing an ftp from the linux box to any external machines fails as well!
Thanks

You'll need to be running ftpd I would think - although it may be controlled by inetd. Do a 'locate ftpd' to find it - you'll need to be root to activate it. If it's not installed, it should be on your disks somewhere. I would also imagine that there is some sort of graphical config for it.

emm .. I dont seem to have ftpd, and I dont think the install CDs has them either... any idea where to download them from, or is there any other way to get it active?
ftp seems to be installed, becasue when I run ftp, it seems to run, it just doesnt allow any remote connection!?
Thanks

In that case it is probably handled by inetd, but you will need to alter your permission in /etc/hosts.allow to allow external users to use ftpd.
{IIRC inetd is the daemon that handles a whole load of internet related daemons, and spawns them as necessary when the requests come in}

My hosts.allow contains the wildcard 'ALL', so I presume it should allow all users! I looked for inetd, but there was nothing as such!?
Is there another place to look at?
Thanks

What does the output of ps -aux | grep inetd give?
Otherwise whats the entire output of ps -aux?

inetd does not show under the running processes! does it need to installed separatly?

OK - I could be wrong about the whole inetd thing.
Besides, if you've been able to ftp locally, then there must be some sort of daemon running to control it.
Post the output of ps -aux and we might be able to find out what's controlling it.
