I have a friend who wants to try linux, but doesn't want to mess with his current system. Does anyone have an older computer that they want to get rid of for cheap?

Burn him a copy of Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.org) - it runs entirely from the CD, but has some of the best hardware detection I have seen - won't affect his harddrive, but will mount his 'doze partitions as read-only.
Boots in about 15 seconds from CD into KDE3 :D

I got a old P166 system with all the fixins (cdrom, Win98, cards, periphals, etc) for S75.00 with shipping. Upgradeablility is the key.
Or you could try some surplus places.

that's running Suse 8.0 already. It has an old ATI All-In-Wonder (Rage Pro) in it that I would like to keep but I've got a Voodoo 5 that works great to include. The box runs great with 64MB on an FIC PA 2012 mb, 4Gb HD, CD& Floppy, Modem, NIC, and Aureal Vortex sound. I'm hurtin' for cash right now, so I'll let it go cheap.:(

How about a Compaq Prosignia 300 with a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers. It used to be a server, so you know it has to run well. I am trying to get Linux Mandrake 8.2 on it right now. You could still ada any other Linux OS on it. If he wants a larger hard drive, he could get one from eBay for about $15 with shipping. I will include all boot disks.
