I'm trying to connect my windows pc to the internet via my linux box. I read plenty of things about masquerate, ipchain, etc.. and I can't understand any of them because because I'm really a newby. The help files say things like "create a script" etc... I don't know how to do these things.
Under windows I use winproxy... that's easy, on linux..I'm simply lost.
could someone give me a step by step explanation?
Thank you for you time

What kind of connection to the internet do you have?
When you say "I'm trying to connect my windows pc to the internet via my linux box" does that mean that you have your Linux box as a firewall with two network cards?
Also, describe your physical network setup (Cable modem goes to which box or to a router or whatever etc). I think I can probably help you 'cause I've hooked up my home system both through a Linux firewall and via a router.
Let me know and I'll see what I can do.

very nice of you, thank you
my linux has 2 network cards
one goes into my road runner modem and the other one goes into a little hub.
3 windows puters also go into the hub.
It's working fine with winproxy if I boot my machine on windows (all are 98) but I don't know how to do it when I boot linux.

What distro are you using?
I just posted this url for Mandrake 8 and Internet Connection Sharing. (http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/doc/80/en/user.html/draknet.html)
If by chance you are using Mandrake 8, then give that link a try.

You could also try the
Easy Connection Sharing NHF (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/network/eznetshare.html)

If you're using ipchains, I really like PMFirewall, Very easy.
http://www.pointman.org/PMFirewall/
It will set up your firewall and masq your network.

sandwichs,
I can help you out as well if you wish?
I would like to know if your Road Runner is using DHCP or Static IP or both? Also is your Linux box a machine you plan on using while it's hosting the internet for the other computers or is it strictly a router?

Thanks you guys... I really do need all the help I can find.
I have RedHat and for now RR is using DHCP.
My linux box is for now a "I wish I was a router".
If I could understand better linux. I would pay for a a static IP and try to host my web pages using apache or something like that.
Once again.. thank you all
