First, I can play mp3s etc but can't play an audio cd.
Second, while it's true that I can play mp3s, the only way to control the volume is by the knob on my speakers...turning the volume up or down on the mixers or xmms does nothing.
Any clues?
This is a soundblaster live.

is the analog signal cable from the back of your CD drive to your sound card connected? just a thought.

Yeah, the audio wire is connected.

Is the line in muted? you can use something like Kmix to check.

I have the same problem. My advice is to make sure, if you have one of those damn reversible flat connectors like me, that the little CD Rom cable plug is in the CD audio in jack and NOT UPSIDE DOWN. However, if you were smarter than I was even, my rh8 box will still only play Mp3's and whot not. No CD audio at all.
I did hear a cd play the other day for about a minute- though I don't think it is a hardware problem. WinXP plays cd's fine.
