I can establish a dial up modem ISP connection OK. Initially I can browse the web and retrieve mail.

Progressively the connection gets slower and slower until it becomes unsuable.

If I try top download the a list of groupnames from a news server, about 1000 or so group names are downloaded and then the traffic stops.

I have the problem on two different PCs running Linux (Mandrake9 and RH7.2) I have changed modems.

Nothing helps.

Any practical help or tips are appreciated.

TIA

Will the modem and ISP working OK in the evil M$ OS? If no... is the modem spanky new? Might be defective hardware (modem).

There are two external modems. One is a geewhizzbang Australian MAESTRO WOMBAT model (I spent big coz I'm limited to dial up) , . The other is an older BANKSIA myModem.

One of the boxes is dual boot. On that box either modem works under the dreaded M$ OS (XP) but leaves me disappointed under Linux (as described) - this leads me to think the hardware is OK.

I've tried dropping the speed, right down to 2400 baud, but it makes no difference.

Bugger, as we say down here :)
