I have Mandrake Linux 6.0. I have this distro, because it's the only one I've found so far that I could get my monitor to work right with, and get to work at all.

I somehow didn't end up with GCC, though. So I started trying to figure out how to install it... There was source, but, uhm, I didn't have a C compiler. I think I figured out I needed to use an RPM to install it.

When I try that, though, it gives some message about <= 3, which I think I figured out meant I needed to update RPM. I tried updating RPM, but all I could find it in was a .rpm... which required the new version of RPM which I was trying to install.

It's been a long morning. :(

Does anyone know where I went wrong in my train of thought, or how to update RPM without using the RPM?

You must have downloaded a newer version of the gcc compiler that cannot be installed with your current version of rpm.

Is there not a gcc compiler included on the Mandrake 6.0 CD's that you could try?

What monitor are you using. As long as you have the specs for it, then you should be able to configure it to work.

I don't have a cd. I think I did an internet install.

My monitor is a SyncMaster 4Ne. If I try to just use the specs in mandrake 7 (.2 I think it was), the screen will just go blank as soon as it loads X. Yes, I know that should of worked... It didn't, though.

Could you go back to where you installed from and see if there is a compatible gcc rpm that will work?

Are you sure it's the monitor that was causing the problem? Did you check the error messages? Could have been something simple that's stopping you from using a newer version. Mandrake 8 I've heard is quite good.

Samsung SyncMaster? How old is the monitor?

There were no error messages. It just didn't display anything.

How would I identify a compatible gcc rpm? I can't go back to where i got it, because I had to get someone to leave on their computer for me to get it from. It wasn't available anywhere I could find on the web.

Not sure about the monitor, but guessing maybe 5 or 6 years.

There were probably errors in various places. /var/log/messages or ?? Xerrors.

You could try Mandrake's ftp servers.

What would it be.

ftp://ftp.linux-mandrake.com/pub

to start and then look for a directory for version 6. Hopefully it's still there.

It isn't there.

And, it's hard to read log files when your monitor doesn't work. :/

You could have swiched to a virtual console (CTRL-ALT-F1 to F6) to login and view/edit files.

I'll have a look around for you.

Wouldn't let me switch to virtual console.

LOL, I could probably find you the thread from when I was doing this. I think it was on this board...

Damn I can't find any ftp servers that have Mandrake 6.0.

How about trying 8.0?

uhm, or I could try upgrading RPM then installing GCC...

*isn't sure if she wants to play tetrinet this badly after all*

Upgrading rpm is not a easy task. Involves upgrading and rebuilding the rpm database (also different versions).

It's a possibility if you can find all you need and some good documentation on the upgrade.

You could post another topic asking if someone has a old copy of Mandrake 6 and wouldn't mind emailing the gcc compiler rpm to you. There could be dependency problems with gcc and it could end up needing more packages. Not sure though. Worth a try?

Must be hot there in Texas. It's around 80+ here at the North Pole (Toronto). Our igloos are starting to melt. ;) I knew I should have installed central air.
