I am looking for a good Video viewer.

Do you use something good to watch movies/video files (avi, mpeg, etc...)? If you do know, please post about it.

Thanks in advance.

(Btw, I use RHL 8.0, I upgraded from 7.3 very recently...).

*runs to the google god* :p

Thanks a lot. I downloaded Xine and all I have to do now is to install and try it.

I'll download and try Mplayer too.

Any more suggestions?

Thanks again for the quick reply. :D

make sure you read the docs for both about installing the divx codecs, and dcss (assuming you live outside the US and are not subject to the DMCA ;))

note: if you use xine to watch dvds (i am not sure if this is specific to nvidia cards or not), and you resize the video window it will not maintain the correct aspect ratio. for example, the people in the video will be too tall or too short (squished) (you know what i mean. :)

ogle will maintain the correct aspect ratio when you resize the video.

I tried to download and install Mplayer recently (using Mandrake 9.0) and I can't seem to get it to install. Do I need to Install the Nvidia drivers first? I'm not quite sure what to do to get it to work. I"ve also tried to get Xine to play dvds but it would not work either. ny suggestions?

for mplayer, you shouldn't need the nvidia drivers, but you definately will want them, all the other drivers are of lower quality.

its not especially user freindly to say this but because of the legal issues, you may be better downloading the source for mplayer and xine and building them yourself, maybe if someone has gotten them to work under Mandrake they'll pipe up. They work fine under gentoo.

I had no problems with mplayer. And now it runs fine. But I am having problems with Xine though.

I followed their instructions... I did:

./configure
make
make install (in su mode)

But it still doesn't work. :( Could somebody help please?

Penguin Liberation Front builds rpms for mplayer for Mandrake. Otherwise, yes compile from source. If you are not comfortable with compiling from source, and mplayer is trickier than most, use Ogle or Xine.

What was it doing that showed it wasn't working?
Can you post any error messages?

there's a video player plugin for XMMS, which is good for general purpose video watching... forget what it's called right now, but it should be in the distro packages...

I could not install xine from what I had downloaded, but I mounted the RHL 8.0 isos and searched for it there. But I could not find it. So I mounted RHL 7.3 ISOs and I found it there.

Xine needs some 'demuxer' plugin to view video CDs. I still haven't been able to view The Wall (Pink Floyd... movie) from Linux. And my Windows is dead! ...for now, at least.

Where can I find the demuxer plugins? Google God is not helping much. Please help.

Ah yes. I've read of problems with Xine under RH8. Not to put you off, but you would do well searching recent postings for this.

But, to help as I can... Xine uses a bunch of "extra" packages that need to be installed. I believe they are listed on the Xine site, or maybe at freshmeat.net. Some of them are related to decss and stuff like that. Wish I could be more specific... but yes, Xine is a pain to install without fulfilling every little dependency....
